Background of the Study
Forensic odontology, a critical component of forensic investigations, benefits significantly from the integration of forensic anthropology. In Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, the collaboration between forensic odontologists and anthropologists has enhanced the identification process through detailed dental analysis and skeletal assessments (Etim, 2023). Forensic anthropology contributes to the interpretation of dental evidence by providing insights into age, sex, and ancestral background, which are crucial for establishing the identity of unknown remains (Bassey, 2024). Advanced imaging technologies and digital dental mapping have further refined these processes, offering increased accuracy and efficiency (Mfon, 2025). Despite these advancements, challenges persist in standardizing methodologies and ensuring consistent evidence handling. This study examines the specific contributions of forensic anthropology to forensic odontology, evaluating its impact on case resolution and proposing measures to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration for improved identification outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
In Calabar South, the contribution of forensic anthropology to forensic odontology is challenged by methodological inconsistencies and limited interdisciplinary integration (Mfon, 2025). Variations in dental record-keeping and inconsistencies in skeletal analysis techniques hinder the accurate identification of individuals. These deficiencies impact the overall effectiveness of forensic investigations and judicial processes. This study aims to identify the gaps in current practices and propose recommendations to enhance the collaboration between forensic odontology and anthropology, thereby improving the accuracy and reliability of identification in legal contexts (Etim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the contribution of forensic anthropology to forensic odontology.
To identify challenges in integrating dental and skeletal evidence.
To recommend strategies for improving interdisciplinary collaboration in identification processes.
Research Questions:
How does forensic anthropology contribute to forensic odontology in identification cases?
What challenges affect the integration of dental and skeletal evidence?
What improvements can enhance interdisciplinary forensic practices?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Integrated forensic imaging significantly improves dental and skeletal correlation.
H2: Inconsistencies in record-keeping reduce identification accuracy.
H3: Enhanced interdisciplinary protocols improve overall forensic outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it advances forensic identification by examining the synergy between forensic anthropology and odontology. The findings will assist forensic professionals in refining evidence integration protocols, enhancing case resolution, and supporting judicial processes. Improved interdisciplinary collaboration will ultimately lead to more accurate and reliable identifications (Bassey, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the forensic anthropological contributions to forensic odontology in Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State. It does not extend to other forensic disciplines.
Definitions of Terms:
Forensic Odontology: The application of dental science to legal investigations, particularly for identifying human remains.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The coordinated use of multiple scientific fields to enhance investigative outcomes.
Forensic Anthropology: The application of anthropological methods to legal cases involving human remains.
